Start with region and custody, not a “best” list
The first decision is whether you can legally use the venue. The second is how money sits there: KYC cash, a self-custody wallet, or play-money. Ranked names come third. The shortlist is top prediction markets. This page is the order of operations.
1. Confirm your region — then stop if blocked
Open the official site. If it blocks you, stop. Do not look for a grey-market mirror. Regional picks and the country pages are research starting points, not licences.
- United States, cash event contracts: start the research path on Kalshi (CFTC designated contract market). ForecastEx is the second DCM on our list. USA markets is the country page. Treat Polymarket as restricted for US persons unless the live site explicitly allows the product. See Is Polymarket legal?.
- United Kingdom: a UKGC-facing exchange such as Smarkets is the usual research start. Kalshi’s DCM status does not travel as a UK licence. UK markets.
- EU / elsewhere: crypto boards may be the research path; member-state geo still applies. EU markets. Wallet ≠ passport.
- Practice with no cash: Manifold. It is not a Kalshi substitute.
The same headline can be two legal products. That is the access briefing. We do not publish VPN tips.
2. Choose custody
- Regulated / KYC cash — Kalshi, PredictIt, ForecastEx. Government ID, bank rails, state or product limits. Clearer for eligible US users. Not “available in every state” from this page.
- Crypto / wallet — Polymarket, Azuro front-ends, SX Bet. You own deposit, network and phishing risk. Faster in some regions. Still geo-gated.
- Play money — Manifold. Learn the ticket before a deposit.
3. Fund a test amount
Note deposit fees, withdrawal times, listed tokens or chains, and whether funds are custodial. Send a probe transfer. Withdraw a remainder once so the loop is proven. Wrong network is the expensive mistake on wallet venues. ACH holds are the expensive surprise on cash venues. Costs sit on fees and risk.
4. Read one market’s rules before any trade
Title, end date, resolution source, and what happens if the event is delayed or vacated. If you cannot name the source, you do not have a view. Resolution disputes is the habit. Then check spread and depth — a 12% Yes on a thin book is not a 12% fill.
5. Compare two profiles, then visit
Open Polymarket vs Kalshi or the pair that matches your region. Use Visit only when eligibility is clear. Swipe is for a shortlist, not a substitute for the rules panel.
First-week checklist
- Pick the country page that matches you. If none does, use Regions and the operator’s own terms.
- Create or connect only on the official domain.
- Read one liquid market end to end. Do not trade yet.
- If you trade, size as tuition. Prefer the liquid contract.
- Try a withdrawal before you add size.
FAQ
What is the first step on a prediction market?
Confirm your region and the venue’s eligibility. Then choose custody: KYC cash, crypto wallet, or play money. Do not start from a random “best” list.
Kalshi, Polymarket or Manifold for a beginner?
Eligible US cash: Kalshi. Global crypto where the live site allows access: Polymarket. Practice with no cash: Manifold. Then compare two profiles before you deposit.
Do I need KYC?
On Kalshi and PredictIt, yes. Wallet venues are often lower-friction, not safer, and geo policy still applies. Read the live onboarding flow.
